The government of Uzbekistan is planning to stage by stage sell the assets of all power plants to private investors, including foreign, said Deputy Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Sherzod Khodjayev, Trend reports with reference to Kazakh media.

He made the statement within the framework of Uzbekistan international energy forum held in Tashkent. Plans of energy sector reforms till 2030 has been presented at the event.

“The most optimal way is to sell part of the shares of hydropower plants to private investors and to create private ventures within the private-public partnership. The next stage is to realize assets of the plants to investors,” said deputy minister.

As a result of the transfer, only a couple of hydropower plants and nuclear power plant will be left within the property of the state. The majority of the electricity generation will be in private hands, he added.

“This model of reforming the energy sector provides for meeting the increasing demand of economy and citizens without a drastic increase of electricity tariffs, as well as for slow but steady decrease of the government’s role and transfer to full-fledged market relations,” he stated.

Recently Khodjayev noted that the volume of electricity consumption in Uzbekistan will exceed 112 kWh by 2030.
