Italy’s Snam has joined “Zero Coalition”, an alliance of companies and associations from around the world aimed at decarbonising maritime transport, Trend reports citing the company.
The aim of the alliance is to establish concrete actions based on the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s target to reduce global annual greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport by at least 50 percent by 2050, with a view to achieving zero emissions as early as possible during this century.
In this vein, the members of the coalition are committed to promoting the launch of zero-emission ships by 2030 and to promoting the development of clean energy sources according to a principle of technological neutrality. Maritime transport accounts for about 80 percent of global trade and 2-3 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. If no action is taken, the emissions of maritime transport are destined to grow between 50 and 250 percent by 2050.
The coalition, born from the initiative of the non-profit organization Global Maritime Forum, includes important global companies in the entire maritime transport value chain, as well as associations such as Friends of Oceans and World Economic Forum. Signatories, besides Snam (the only Italian member), include Moller Maersk, Vestas, Lloyds, Siemens Gamesa, Unilever, the ports of Antwerp, Rotterdam and Vancouver, and China Navigation Company. The initiative is supported, among others, by UNCTAD, the UN organization for trade and development, and by Irena, the international agency for renewable energy.
