BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct.29
By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:
Reactivation of Dede Gorgud semi-submersible drilling rig, which is expected to be deployed for drilling a well at Azerbaijan’s Karabakh oil and gas field hasn’t been completed yet, Trend learned from Norway’s Equinor company, which is engaged in this project.
“Reactivation work on the rig is still ongoing. According to current plan the Karabakh well will be spudded later this year,” said the company.
Karabakh oil and gas field, discovered in 2000, is located 130 kilometers to the east of Baku. The sea depth in the field varies in the range of 250-450 meters. The initial oil reserves of the field are estimated at 100 million tons.
Earlier, a source in Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR told Trend that the work on reactivation and modernization of Dede Gorgud semi-submersible drilling rig is planned to be completed by late October 2019.
The Dede Gorgud rig will take part in drilling operations as part of the projects conducted by SOCAR jointly with the Norwegian Equinor. Using the rig, an appraisal well will be drilled at the Karabakh field, and then an exploration well at the Aypara area.
Equinor also attracted Caspian Drilling Company (CDC) as a drilling contractor at the Karabakh field. Under the terms of the agreement, the CDC will drill two wells at this field using the drilling rig Dede Gorgud after its modernization.
