Turkmen gas concern inks deal with Italy’s RINA company on TAPI project

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, Dec. 6

By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

Turkmengas State Concern, the Turkmen national gas company, has selected Italy’s RINA company as its technical consultant for supervision and project support services related to the Turkmen section of the TAPI (Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India) gas pipeline, Trend reports referring to the company.

The contract, valued at around $13 million, covers technical advice and support services for the construction of a 214km of pipeline across Turkmenistan along with two
compressor stations, according to the report.

The Turkmen section of the pipeline project is the first of its kind for the country and has a budget of around $1 billion. It is a critical infrastructure project that will impact the global movement of gas from Turkmenistan.

The TAPI pipeline will bring significant economic benefit to Turkmenistan. Its construction will be carried out in two phases and is expected to be completed in four years. The first phase will be the pipeline itself and the second will comprise the two compressor stations.

After full commissioning of the TAPI pipeline with a length of more than 1,840 kilometers, it will be possible to supply 33 billion cubic meters of Turkmen natural gas annually.

The project’s cost is estimated at $10 billion.

The Turkmengas State Concern is the leader of the TAPI Pipeline Company Ltd. international consortium. It makes decisions regarding the investors and acts as the main financier and manager of the project. The consortium also includes Afghan Gas Corporation, Pakistan’s Inter State Gas Systems (Private) Limited Company and India’s GAIL Company.

The project is being promoted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which acts as a project transaction advisor. TAPI's resource base will be Galkynysh, the second biggest field in the world (after South Pars in Iran).
