Effect of large-scale reforms on energy sector of Uzbekistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 28

By Ilkin Seyfaddini – Trend:

The decision of the Uzbek leadership to establish the Ministry of Energy has created conditions for the gradual achievement of one of the main foundations of social and economic development of the country - the full-scale energy security of Uzbekistan, press service representative of Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan told Trend in an interview.

"In February 2020, the Energy Ministry, the ministry of a new formation that united all the structures of the fuel and energy complex into a single mechanism for the first time, celebrated its first year of operation," the representative stressed.

The representative noted that the organizations overseen by the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan currently include Uzbekneftegaz JSC, Uztransgaz JSC, Khududgaztayominot JSC and three joint stock companies created as a result of reorganization of the former Uzbekenergo: "Thermal power plants", "National power networks of Uzbekistan" and "Regional power networks", as well as JSC "Uzbekenergoenergo", "Uzenergosinspektsiya", "Uzneftegazinspektsiya", "Uzatom" Agency.

It was also noted that the purpose of large-scale reforms is to increase the efficiency of the fuel and energy complex of Uzbekistan, and the Ministry of Energy is the single coordinator of this process.

"At this stage of its development, the market has chosen a single buyer model. After the introduction of smart meters and SCADA system and the adoption of the legislative framework, the market will move on to the next stages of development until the entire market becomes fully market-based, where electricity prices will be determined by supply and demand," said the ministry.
