Romania names viable options for Southern Gas Corridor’s expansion

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 15

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Infrastructure offered by the Interconnector between Romania and Bulgaria, BRUA pipeline and the Interconnector between Romania and Hungary, could be a viable option for the next stages of expansion of the Southern Gas Corridor to the Balkans and Western markets, Niculae Havrileț, State Secretary of the Ministry for Economy, Energy and Business Environment of Romania, told Trend.

“The BRUA and the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) will also serve the interest expressed by Hungary to be connected to the Southern Gas Corridor infrastructure. Romania is ready to work, together with Bulgaria and Hungary, in defining a coherent regional approach in diversifying our gas supplies. Taking into consideration all these good premises, we are convinced that the infrastructure offered by the Interconnector between Romania and Bulgaria, BRUA pipeline and the Interconnector between Romania and Hungary, could be a viable option for the next stages of expansion of the Southern Gas Corridor to the Balkans and Western markets,” he said.

Havrileț recalled that having all these in mind, Romania presented in February this year to the members of the SGC Advisory Council the proposal to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding on exploring the possibilities to use the above-mentioned transmission infrastructure in the forthcoming stages of the development of the Corridor.

“We think this initiative could have a positive impact for many countries in the SEE region, in terms of increasing regional energy security, diversifying of supply sources and routes and reducing energy vulnerabilities. Moreover, this initiative would help provide a safe and efficient transport infrastructure, while being in line with the common interests of extending the SGC infrastructure towards the Balkans and Central Europe which is also a target market for other important gas transmission infrastructure projects. Preliminary bilateral discussions on this subject were positive and could be extended to other EU MS,” added the state secretary.
