BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 26

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Iran intends to resume gas imports from Turkmenistan, said Head of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Hassan Montazer Torbati, Trend reports with reference to the Business Turkmenistan information portal.

According to the plans to increase gas production and develop the gas network in Iran, the country welcomes the new agreements with Turkmenistan.

A 25-year contract between the National Iranian Gas Company and the Turkmengaz company was signed in 1997.

Under the contract, Turkmengaz was to annually export 8-10 billion cubic meters of gas a year to Iran.

It suspended gas exports to Iran in 2016 because NIGC did not pay for the gas supply.

According to the decision of the Stockholm International Arbitration Court, the National Iranian Gas Company must pay a debt of $2 billion to the Turkmengaz company.
