In connection with COVID-19 pandemic, the deadline for the adoption of a new standard for diesel fuel in Georgia should be postponed by one year, the Union of Importers of Oil Products of Georgia told Trend.
According to the Union of Importers of Petroleum Products, from January 1, 2021, a government decree will enter into force in Georgia, according to which the quality and environmental characteristics of diesel fuel will be equatl to Euro-5 fuel.
According to the source, if a new government decree on diesel fuel comes into force in 2021, the only country from which diesel fuel will no longer be imported will be Azerbaijan, since according to the Azerbaijani side, reconstruction and modernization was carried out in the country this year. The existing refinery facilities, after which they had to produce diesel fuel in accordance with the Euro-5 standard.
"The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the reconstruction and refurbishment of refineries,," the union said.
The union also said that the refineries continue to produce improved diesel fuel in accordance with the Euro-4 standard.
The union further said that to decrease the environmental impact, it is necessary to modernize the vehicle fleet in parallel with improving the quality of fuel, which, unfortunately, due to various objective reasons, has not yet been implemented in Georgia.
