Iran boosts generation capacity of thermal power plants

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct. 26

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The electricity generation capacity of thermal power plants in Iran has increased by about 10 percent in about 10 years, said Mohsen Tarztalab, Managing Director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Energy of Iran.

According to Tarztalab, $3.5 billion was saved by increasing electricity generation capacity.

The director added that the generation capacity of thermal power plants in Iran amounted to about 54,000 megawatt hours in March 2011.

"At present, this figure has increased by 25 percent to 68,000 megawatt hours," he said.

Tarztalab noted that in addition, the electricity consumption in Iran amounted to about 42,000 megawatts daily in March 2011, while this figure exceeded more than 58,000 megawatt hours in this summer.

The director emphasized that Iran's thermal power plants generated more than 167 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity during the first six months of the current Iranian year (March 20-September 21, 2020). However, the TPPs generated 121 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity in first six months in 2011, and 152 trillion kilowatt-hours - in the same period last Iranian year.

“The annual energy consumption at thermal power plants in Iran was about 57 billion cubic meters nine years ago (from March 21, 2011 to March 21, 2012). This figure reached to 74 billion cubic meters in last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020)," he noted.

Currently, the total generation of power plants in Iran, including thermal, water, alternative, small-scale, and nuclear power plants is 83,685 megawatts, where 81 percent of it is produced by TPPs.

At present, the combined power cycle accounts for 41.7 percent of the generation capacity of Iran's thermal power plants with 28,249 megawatts, the gas units account for 34.9 percent with 23,657 megawatts, and steam units account for 23.4 percent with 15,829 megawatts.
