Solar to be dominant source of electricity generation in Europe

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Oct.28

By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

Europe’s solar generation capacity is expected to grow strongly post-2020 once the COVID-19 short-term impacts on the solar market begin to fade out, Trend quotes Máté Heisz, Head of International Cooperation, SolarPower Europe, as saying.

He made the remarks during the Baku International Energy Charter Forum “Transition to renewables in power generation, transport, heating and cooling: modern challenges and trends”.

“Looking forward, solar is set to be the dominant source of electricity generation in Europe. A 100 percent renewable energy system is primarily a solar story. As of 2040, solar PV becomes the dominant source of electricity generation across all three scenarios in Europe. By 2050, reaches at least 48 percent in the Laggard scenario and up to 63 percent in the Leadership scenario.

“A 100 percent renewable energy system is the most cost-efficient way to become climate neutral by 2050. The cumulative costs of achieving a 100 percent renewable energy by 2050 in the Moderate scenario are 6 percent lower than the cost of Inadequate action in the less ambitious Laggard scenario, which reaches only 62 percent renewables by 2050, thus missing both the target of European climate neutrality and the Paris Agreement.

“As part of the European Green Deal, the EU prepares legislation that will enshrine climate-neutrality into law.

“SolarPower Europe has developed a solar-powered recovery plan which includes: 1) “Power-up” – additional solar tenders; 2) de-risking for medium-sized companies willing to engage in corporate renewable PPAs; 3) Moderation of EU electricity grid infrastructure; 4) development of robust industrial strategy,” he said.
