By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

The Nagorno-Karabakh region is one of the main regions forming water resources in Azerbaijan, Trend reports on Nov. 2 with reference to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Energy.

“The territory of the Nagorno-Karabakh region is rich in renewable energy resources,” the ministry said. “Some 25 percent of the local water resources of Azerbaijan, that is, about 2.56 billion cubic meters of water resources per year, are being formed in this territory.”

“The main rivers of the region, such as Tartar, Bazarchay (Bargushadchay), Gadjari and other small rivers, have great water and energy potential,” the ministry said. “Some of them have been used since the Soviet period, but a great part will be available for using in the future."

In accordance with the data, there were three big hydroelectric power stations in the occupied Azerbaijani territories, one of which was built in 1976 on the territory of the Tartar district together with the Sarsang reservoir on the Tartar river.

"The station consisted of two hydraulic units with a capacity of 25 megawatts each,” the ministry said. “Sarsang is one of the highest dams in the country in terms of the height of the dam (125 meters). The Sarsang reservoir provided about 125,000 hectares of land in six districts (Tartar, Aghdam, Barda, Goranboy, Yevlakh, and Aghjabadi) with irrigation water. The station generated 81.9 million kilowatt-hours of electricity for the year in 1990. The station has been under occupation since 1993."

Taking into account that the proper maintenance was not conducted in the complex, wear and tear of the used equipment are observed, first of all, it will be necessary to carry out restoration work and then assess its technical condition.
