New power plant to be built in Turkmenistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 11

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

A combined wind and solar power plant is being built in Turkmenistan, said Turkmen Energy Minister Charymyrat Purchekov during a working meeting, Trend reports with reference to Turkmenistan’s State News Agency.

The power plant will have a capacity of 10 MW.

The construction is being carried out in order to implement the Concept on the development of the Altyn Asyr Turkmen Lake region in 2019-2025.

Turkmen scientists believe that the creation of a large artificial reservoir in the Karakum will improve the reclamation condition of the irrigated areas of Turkmenistan, increase agricultural productivity and prevent salinization of the soil.

According to initial plans, the total capacity of the new water intake will be 132 billion cubic meters, and the area of the water mirror will be about 2,000 square kilometers.

Turkmenistan is expected to increase electricity exports by 8.7 percent by 2025.

The construction of new power plants, power transmission lines, modern transformer substations and switchgears will contribute to the increase in exports.

The Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan also previously reported that there are opportunities for supplying Turkmen electricity in transit through Afghanistan to Tajikistan. By 2030, the Caspian country plans to produce electricity in the amount of up to 35.5 billion kilowatt-hours.
