Russia ready to expand mutually beneficial co-op with Uzbekistan in fuel, energy sector

Energy ministers of Uzbekistan and Russia discussed digitalization of production and financial processes of energy companies in Uzbekistan, Trend reports with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan.

The Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan Alisher Sultanov, during his visit to Moscow on December 14, 2020, held a meeting with the newly appointed Minister of Energy of Russia Nikolai Shulginov, during which it was noted that cooperation with Russian companies in the fuel and energy industry is of strategic importance for Uzbekistan.

Sultanov also noted the positive dynamics of the development of relations with Russian financial institutions in the field of attracting funds for energy projects.

In turn, Shulginov noted the importance of interaction between the parties in the oil and gas sector, as one of the key areas of partnership in the energy sector.

According to the information, today five projects in the hydropower industry of Uzbekistan are being implemented with the financial support of Russia’s Vnesheconombank. These include the construction of new mini hydroelectric power plants (on the Dargom canal and as part of the Nizhnechatkal hydroelectric power station), the modernization of the operating Farhad and Tupalang hydroelectric power plants.

In addition, partnerships are also being discussed in a number of hydropower projects.

Furthermore, cooperation between the two countries in the oil and gas sector has important prospects. LUKOIL produced 84.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas in 2004-2020 under two PSA (production sharing agreement) Kandym and Gissar.

The volume of actually utilized investments for these projects amounted to over $7.4 billion.

Also, the Shakhpakhty and Dzhel fields in Uzbekistan are being developed with Russian Gazprom. As of November 1 of this year Shakhpakhty produced 4.53 billion cubic meters of natural gas. In addition, work is underway to implement the PSA for the Mustakillikning 25 Yilligi field.
