SOCAR Georgia talks about reducing tariffs for social gas

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.18

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Following negotiations between the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation, and SOCAR, Georgia will receive social gas at a reduced tariff of 200 million cubic meters, SOCAR Georgia General Director Mahir Mammadov told Trend on Friday.

"We have reduced this price for Georgia because the previous price was high and lagged behind the current realities of life. This gives Georgia an opportunity to stabilize prices in the social market," he said.

According to Mammadov, Georgia has also taken an important step forward.

"Georgia had a debt to SOCAR, and, according to the contract, it had to be returned within four years. The country returned this debt at once," he said.

As for the continuation of such preferential campaigns in the future, then, according to the general director of SOCAR Georgia, this will be decided in the process of further negotiations.

"Our contract is a living mechanism, and we are constantly negotiating about its various provisions, improving or adapting it to this or that situation. Moreover, the last year was completely different due to the pandemic. Oil and gas prices fell dramatically in international markets, even the prices at which these products were supplied under long-term contracts," the CEO stressed.

The change in the contract for the supply of social gas, which has been in effect since 2016, was made after a meeting between Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Gakharia, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia Natia Turnava, General Director of the Oil and Gas Corporation Giorgi Bakhtadze and President of the company SOCAR Rovnaga Abdullayev.

During the meeting, the sides noted good-neighborly relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan and various areas of partnership. Special attention was paid to investment projects carried out by SOCAR in Georgia, as well as the prospects for further deepening cooperation.

It was noted that the Georgian Corporation is successfully cooperating with SOCAR in the field of natural gas, another result of which is an agreement to optimize the price of social gas in the country.
