The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey has prolonged the license for the exploration of oil and gas deposits of the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO), a source in the ministry told Trend on Apr.14.
According to the source, TPAO applied to the ministry to prolong the license for more ten years on January 25, 2021.
TPAO will conduct oil and gas exploration in the provinces of Adana and Mersin on a total area of 2,980 hectares, the ministry said.
In 2019, exploration drilling work was carried out in Turkey to search for hydrocarbons, 5,063 exploration wells were drilled.
During the year, the total depth of exploration drilling operations amounted to over 9.5 million meters.
At the same time, TPAO drilled 3,048 exploration wells. Some 104 wells with a total depth of 133,386 meters were drilled by organizations of the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration of Turkey (MTA), 257 wells with a total depth of 311,662 meters were drilled by other Turkish companies.
Foreign companies drilled 1,312 exploration wells with a total depth of over 2.2 million meters, and joint ventures and consortiums - 342 wells.
From January through December 2019, 510 deposits were drilled by TPAO, 8 – by MTA, 24 – by other domestic companies, 306 - by foreign companies, and 93 deposits – by joint consortiums.
In April 2014, a law came into force in Turkey allowing oil exploration in forests and national parks.
