Azerbaijan seeks to build wind power plants in liberated Lachin, Kalbajar

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 19

By Fidan Babayeva - Trend:

Azerbaijan plans to build wind power plants in the Lachin and Kalbajar districts, previously liberated from Armenian occupation, Acting Director of the State Agency on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources of Azerbaijan Tabriz Ammayev told Trend.

According to Ammayev, projects on renewable energy sources (RES) in the liberated territories will be prepared depending on the demand for electricity.

“The greatest potential in the field of wind energy when monitoring the liberated territories was identified in Lachin and Kalbajar. Preliminary studies show that certain areas are suitable for the construction of wind farms in terms of wind speed and direction. The wind speed there reaches an average of 12 meters per second, which, according to international standards, is a favorable condition for construction," he said.

The acting director said that an agreement was signed between the Azerbaijani Energy Ministry and the Japanese TEPSCO company on the creation of a ‘green energy’ zone in the liberated territories.

"To effectively use the potential of wind energy in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan, it is planned to develop energy efficient technologies based on modern approaches to energy management. In addition, within the framework of this project, it is planned to study international experience in this area and demand for electricity," Ammayev said.

The use of renewable energy sources was identified by the head of the Azerbaijani state as one of the priority areas for the development of the energy sector. Thus, the focus is on the implementation of pilot projects for the construction of a wind farm with an installed capacity of 240 megawatts and a solar power plant with an installed capacity of 200 megawatts in accordance with contracts signed with ACWA Power and Masdar (OJSC) in January 2021.
