Generation capacity of Iran's thermal power plants up

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 3

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

In general, 12,000 megawatt-hours have been added to the electricity generation capacity of thermal power plants in Iran over the past four years, said Mohsen Tarztalab, Managing Director of Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company, Trend reports citing the company’s website.

According to Tarztalab, this was achieved through the construction of 46 blocks, increasing functionality and removing existing production restrictions.

The director added that the construction of new thermal power plants increased by 52 percent during the 12th government (2016-2021) compared to the 11th government (2012-2016).

“Over the past four years, the construction of thermal power plants with a generation capacity of 16,300 megawatt-hours of electricity has begun. It is hoped that these power plants will be launched during the ruling of the new government,” he said.

Tarztalab noted that during the outgoing government, contracts were signed for the construction of new power plants with a foreign investment of about 4.3 billion euro, which can generate 9,260 megawatt-hours of electricity. However, due to the US sanctions against Iran, the implementation of these contracts has been suspended.

The director emphasized that over the past four years, an average of 535 million euro has been paid annually to the Iran’s Thermal Power Plants Holding Company through various ways, including Tavanir Company's funds, securities and so on.

"On average, 195 million euro are spent annually on the operation, maintenance and repair of power plants, about 160 million euro on guaranteed purchases of electricity from private companies, and 180 million euro on the development of power plants," he said.
