Kazakhstan develops draft roadmap within decarbonization of economy

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 31

Trend:

Kazakhstan has developed a draft of its own roadmap as part of the task of decarbonizing the economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nogayev said, Trend reports citing the Kazakh media.

Nogayev made the remark during an international practical conference in Russia's Tatarstan, dedicated to a new paradigm for the development of the fuel and energy complex within the EU decision on decarbonization.

The package of documents developed to date includes:

1. Draft updated commitments of Kazakhstan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement until 2030;

2. Draft roadmap for the implementation of these commitments for 2021–2025;

3. World Bank’s technical report entitled 'Updating Kazakhstan's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and developing a roadmap for the implementation of the NDC beyond 2020.’

In addition, active work is underway to develop the Concept of low-carbon development until 2050, which provides for measures for deep decarbonization. The concept is expected to be approved soon.

“In addition, we are working on the introduction of an internal carbon tax on energy consumption, import and export carbon duties, as well as the creation of a Carbon Fund,” said Nogayev.

According to the minister, all this will help avoid full payment of the border carbon tax in the EU and will ensure the funds received from the carbon tax to be directed to the implementation of climate projects in order to achieve the goal of deep decarbonization of the economy.
