In a period of rapid growth in world demand for natural gas, the strategic importance of underground gas storage facilities again becomes relevant, Trend reports via State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).
There are two underground gas storages in Azerbaijan - Galmaz and Garadagh, the total volume of which is 3.5 billion cubic meters, the report said.
"Azerbaijan surpasses a number of European countries in terms of gas storage volumes. Work is currently underway to bring the total volume of Azerbaijan's underground gas storage facilities to five billion cubic meters," report says.
Azerbaijan's annual gas usage is 13 billion cubic meters, the country's available gas storage facilities are sufficient to meet about 30 percent of domestic demand, SOCAR said.
