BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 24. We shouldn’t choose between solving the energy crisis and climate crisis, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) Fatih Birol said at the World Economic Forum, Trend reports.
“We can solve both of them with right investments. I understand that the current priority is to fix the energy security problem. But we shouldn’t forget that one of the reasons why we have such high prices is the heat wave, which is a result of the climate change and it is only the beginning.
I think we are in the middle of the first global energy crisis. In 1970s it was an oil crisis, and now we have oil crisis, natural gas crisis, coal crisis. Energy security is a priority for many governments if not all. Until February 24 Russia was a number one oil exporter, natural gas exporter to the world, major player in the global coal markets. The international community, most of the countries are pushing back now. The world has to replace the oil and gas coming from Russia. The immediate response should include bringing additional oil and gas to the markets. But I prefer that our immediate response does not lock in our energy infrastructure for fossil fuels for many years to come,” he explained.
