BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 7. Gas consumption in Iran, at the current rate, will reach 1.42 billion cubic meters per day in the coming years, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Majid Chegeni said at a press conference in Tehran on August 7, Trend reports.

Chegeni said that the National Iranian Gas Company is taking serious measures to stop the alarming rate and optimize consumption. Meanwhile, currently, the consumption stands at over 400 million cubic meters/day.

As one of the tools to manage the growing consumption, the official pointed to the project on electrification of the country's gas network. As a part of this project, pilot steps will be taken in 6 provinces, which should help keep the gas consumption under control.

“In addition, work continues to optimize boiler rooms at commercial and multi-storey apartments. So far, 74,000 out of 329,000 boiler rooms in the country have been optimized,” he noted.

Overall, 242 billion cubic meters of gas were consumed in Iran within the last Iranian year (March 21, 2022 through March 20, 2023).

Of the mentioned volume, 123 billion cubic meters were consumed by residential buildings, commercial and small industrial facilities, 48 billion cubic meters - by large industrial facilities and 71 billion cubic meters - by thermal power plants.

Iran stands second in the world for gas reserves, with about 34 trillion cubic meters of gas. Reportedly, Iran's gas production capacity is more than 1 billion cubic meters. Iran exports only a small portion of the gas produced in the country, about 6 percent.
