BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 9. Azerbaijan is among Top 5 largest pipeline gas exporters to the EU as of the first quarter of 2023, Trend reports.
During the first quarter of the year, the leading contributors to pipeline gas supplies to Europe were as follows: Norway led the way with 21.7 billion cubic meters, securing a substantial 53 percent share. Following closely were North Africa, comprising Algeria and Libya, which collectively provided 7.3 billion cubic meters, accounting for 18 percent of the total. Russia contributed 5 billion cubic meters, representing 12 percent of the supply, while Great Britain delivered 4.4 billion cubic meters, constituting an 11 percent share. Additionally, Azerbaijan played a notable role with 2.8 billion cubic meters, making up 7 percent of the total pipeline gas supplies to Europe.
Azerbaijan increased its import share in total EU imports to 4 percent in the first quarter of 2023 from 3 percent in the previous quarter.
The data released by the European Commission shows that imports from Azerbaijan through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline decreased by 6 percent quarter-quarter, but increased by 13 percent year-on-year and 133 percent compared to 2021, reaching 2.8 bcm.
Positioned at the core of Europe's energy infrastructure, the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP) serves as a critical conduit, facilitating the transportation of approximately 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas to a wide range of markets.
Remarkably, TAP holds the potential for substantial expansion, capable of achieving an annual capacity of 20 billion cubic meters. The significance of TAP, both strategically and economically, is emphasized by its essential role in ensuring Europe's reliable access to a fresh natural gas supply. This pivotal role makes a significant contribution to enhancing energy security, advancing the diversification of energy sources, and accelerating the ambitious journey towards achieving decarbonization objectives.
