BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 26. Iranian Central Oil Fields Company (ICOFC) has launched a new gas well #12 in the Sarajeh underground gas storage facility in Qom Province, Trend reports.
In this regard, an event was held with the participation of Executive Director of Iran’s Central Oil Fields Company (ICOFC), Mehdi Heydari.
It will be possible to produce 500,000 barrels of gas per day from well #12 of the Sarajeh underground gas storage facility.
From the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2023) to December 26, 2023), 1 billion cubic meters of gas has been pumped into the Sarajeh underground gas storage. During the next four months, it is planned to take about 10 million cubic meters of gas from this storage daily.
Speaking at the event, Mehdi Heydari said that drilling of gas well #12 began in mid-August and was completed in about 3 months. The costs of drilling this well have been reduced to a minimum.
Heydari added that more than 3 billion cubic meters of gas have been pumped into the country's 2 underground gas storage facilities (Sarajeh and Shourijeh D) so far this year.
He stressed that during the peak of gas consumption in winter, the volume of gas to be taken from these two underground gas storages will exceed the gas produced from phase 1 of the South Pars gas field.
The Sarajeh gas field was discovered in 1956 and has produced 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas and 3.5 million barrels of gas condensate for Iran. However, it only has 8.5 billion cubic meters of gas reserves left, and only 20 percent of them can be extracted with current technologies. Therefore, Iran decided to convert the field into an underground storage facility in 2012 after creating the necessary infrastructure. The facility can store up to 3.1 billion cubic meters of gas, which are injected in 8 months and withdrawn in 4 months of the year. The facility also adds some gas to the reservoir when it releases gas.
The South Pars gas field (called North Dome in Qatar) is a joint gas field between Iran and Qatar. The proven reserves of the South Pars Gas Field are estimated at 51 trillion cubic meters of gas, of which 36 trillion are extractable. Iran's share in the field is 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of gas condensate.
