BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 30. Director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency (AREA) under the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan Javid Abdullayev named the priority task to be solved to start exporting "green" energy to Europe, Trend reports.
During an interview on Friday with a local TV channel, Abdullayev said the transmission system for energy transfer will need to be enhanced.
"Serious efforts are being made to overcome network constraints and identify the capacity of the cable that will be run from Azerbaijan to Georgia, then along the bottom of the Black Sea to Romania, and ultimately to Hungary and other concerned nations," he said.
According to the AREA director, a company has already been selected (in accordance with Azerbaijani legislation) to conduct a feasibility study on the project for the export of "green energy" from Azerbaijan to Europe within a year. The company will be made public shortly.
The secretariat of this project is based in Baku, within the AREA structure.
"Transmission operators from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary, which had previously formed joint ventures to carry out the project, are in frequent contact. AREA's feasibility study must be prepared by a company that works along the entire route. That is, Azerbaijan and its foreign partners have mutual trust and understanding," Abdullayev emphasized.
Given that this initiative is important to the EU, Azerbaijan intends to export approximately 5 GW of "green energy" to European countries by 2030.
Concerning the acquisition of clean energy from Central Asian nations (Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan) and its transit to the EU via Azerbaijan and Georgia, the AREA head stated that the work of institutionalizing the required structure is underway.
