South Caucasus Pipeline marks surge in gas transportation volume

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 17. Gas transportation via the South Caucasus gas pipeline (Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum) witnessed a growth from 20.8 billion cubic meters in 2022 to over 21.8 billion cubic meters in 2023, indicating a 4.8 percent increase, Trend reports via Azerbaijan’s State Statistics Committee.

This surge constituted 54.8 percent of the total gas transported through Azerbaijan's gas pipelines in 2023, compared to 53 percent in the previous year. The overall volume of gas transported through Azerbaijan's main gas pipelines in 2023 amounted to over 39.8 billion cubic meters, marking a 1.4 percent rise from the 39.2 billion cubic meters recorded in 2022.

The South Caucasus Gas Pipeline (SCP), in operation since the end of 2006, plays a crucial role in transporting gas from the Shah Deniz field to Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Türkiye. Notably, commercial deliveries from the expanded section of the pipeline commenced to Türkiye in June 2018 and to Europe in December 2020.

The shareholders of SCP Co include bp (operator - 29.99%), SGC (21.02%), LUKOIL (19.99%), TPAO (19.00%), and NICO (10.00%).
