BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 28. Azerbaijan's energy system capacity could potentially double from the current level by 2040, reaching 14.5 GW, Trend reports referring to the research of the World Bank (WB).

Substantial growth is expected in wind power generation, while the proportion of electricity generated from gas fuel is anticipated to decline.

"If Azerbaijan's wind power capacity stood at 0.1 megawatts in 2021, our projections suggest it could reach 5.9 GW by 2040," highlighted the research.

According to the bank's assessments, while electricity generation from gas amounted to 6.6 GW in 2021, it is projected to decrease to 4.4 GW by 2040.

Additionally, the WB forecasts a 3 GW increase in the total energy capacity of Azerbaijan from solar power plants by 2040 (Azerbaijan didn't have a solar panel plant until 2021).

An optimistic projection predicts that all proposed renewable energy projects in Azerbaijan will increase the share of renewable energy sources (including water, wind, and solar) in the energy system capacity by 2040.
