BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 18. The German company Uniper is eager to boost its procurement of Azerbaijani gas, Head of Uniper Office in Azerbaijan Rashad Huseynli told local journalists, Trend reports.
In late August, the president of the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR), Rovshan Najaf met with a member of Uniper's board and Chief Commercial Officer, Carsten Poppinga in Baku. The two parties highlighted the successful implementation of a gas purchase agreement related to the Shah Deniz field.
“Our contract for gas procurement from Shah Deniz involves annual purchases of one and a half billion cubic meters from this field. We are currently in negotiations with SOCAR to increase supplies of Azerbaijani gas,” Huseynli stated.
He did not disclose any further details until the completion of the relevant negotiations.
To note, since December 2020, nine European companies have been reaping the benefits of gas flowing from Shah Deniz through the Southern Gas Corridor. Increases in Azerbaijan's gas exports since 2023 have led to a growth in the number of registered businesses.
In 2023, the gas exported to Europe hit the ground running at 11.8 billion cubic meters, with hopes high to surpass the 12.5 billion cubic meters mark in 2024.
