BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 4. Azerbaijani Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov addressed the “Clean Energy and Innovation Ministers” meeting in the city of Foz do Iguaçu within the framework of Brazil's G20 presidency, Trend reports.
Underlining that Brazil has an important mission to promote a rapid transition to clean energy through the G20 and COP platforms, the Minister talked about the goals of Azerbaijan, which will host COP29, to achieve an energy transition that all countries can benefit from, based on equity and equality, and in particular their initiatives.
Furthermore, as a bridge between developed and developing countries and different parties, Azerbaijan aims to achieve a balanced result based on solidarity, increase climate finance, and adopt new initiatives and commitments removing barriers to energy transition.
We emphasized that Azerbaijan initiated the COP29 "Commitment on Green Energy Zones and Corridors" as a result of our activities to create "green energy spaces" with zero emissions in regions with abundant renewable energy resources, as well as various transmission infrastructures between centers of energy supply and demand over long distances.
In addition, it was also noted that our Green Deal on integrating 2 gigawatts of power plants into the grid, which more than doubles the country's power generation to 33 percent and directing 5 gigawatts to exports by 2030, articulated the Global Energy Storage and Grid Commitment initiative.
To develop the grid infrastructure that will be the "backbone" of the energy transition, we propose to increase global energy storage capacity sixfold to 1,500 gigawatts by 2030 and add or upgrade a total of more than 80 million kilometers of electricity grids by 2040.
Another of our initiatives relates to hydrogen, a key component of our transformational development program and energy suppliers. Azerbaijan is determined to transform itself into a 'green energy' country and is committed to advancing the global energy transition,” the minister said.
