EU to provide funds for support of security for Aral Sea region

European Union made decision to allocate five million euro within the framework of UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund For the Aral Sea Region in Uzbekistan, Trend reports with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan.

The decision was made within the framework of the meeting between Head of the Uzbekistan Mission to the European Union, Dilyor Khakimov, and Riina Kionka, the Chief Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of the European Council held on July 15, 2019 .

During the meeting, the sides expressed satisfaction with the progress of joint work on the draft Agreement on Expanded Partnership and Cooperation between Uzbekistan and the European Union. In particular, within the framework of the second round of negotiations on the draft document, held on June 25-26 in Brussels, the parties managed to agree many of its important points. It is planned to organize the next round of negotiations in Tashkent to continue the discussion.

Riina Kyonka stressed the EU’s interest in supporting the UN Multi-Partner Human Security Trust Fund for the Aral Sea region in Uzbekistan.

The European side emphasized that the European Union pays great importance to cooperation with Uzbekistan and other Central Asian countries, evidenced by the adoption of the new EU Strategy for Central Asia on June 17, 2019.

Aral Sea Region is a region surrounding Aral Sea, which was an endorheic lake lying between Kazakhstan (Aktobe and Kyzylorda Regions) in the north and Uzbekistan (Karakalpakstan autonomous region) in the south.
