Iran advised to remove tax exemptions for public organizations

TEHRAN, Iran, Nov.12

Trend:

Iran's government should remove tax exemptions that were implemented for organizations and individuals with high revenues, Iranian economist Heydat Mostakhdemin said in an interview with Trend.

"It needs to be done to have an alternative for oil revenues," he said.

"One of the main issues in the government and the parliament has been this economic policy in recent years - to govern the country in accordance with oil revenues, and it wasn't working so well considering the imposed sanctions and economic pressure," Mostakhdemin said.

"The government tried to compensate for the costs through taxes, and it created even more problems," he said. "If this policy was implemented through social cooperation, there would've been better results."

"So far, we've been using oil revenues to manage the country, but this has to be fixed," Mostakhdemin said.

"The debates on taxation are important, and the tax base shoudl be expanded," said the expert. "The government should accept the fact that there cannot be any tax exemptions for economic activities."

"Those earning high revenues are exempted from taxes, while employees and workers pay taxes," he said. "The country can be managed better through preventing tax evasion, and removing tax exemptions. This way, we wouldn't have to rely on oil revenues."

The oil revenues would be better used for improving transportation and roads, education sector and construction projects, Mostakhdemin said.
