Cash use via ATMs intensifies in Uzbekistan - Central Bank

Cash payments via ATMs in Uzbekistan increased by 11.1 percent in nominal value from January through April 2020, compared to the same period of 2019, and exceeded 23.1 trillion soum ($2.2 billion), Trend reports citing the Central Bank of Uzbekistan.

The number of ATMs reached 417,800 units by May 1, 2020, which is 55.3 percent more compared to May 1, 2019. The number of installed ATMs and kiosks increased by 44.2 percent.

The number of bank plastic cards in circulation increased by 14.8 percent to 21.3 million units.

The largest number of cards among state banks was issued by the Halyk Bank - four million (7.5 percent growth), with the participation of foreign capital: Hamkorbank - 879,200 (growth by 27.6 percent), private banks: Orient Finance Bank - 252,400 (growth by 16.1 percent).

As of today, banking activities in Uzbekistan are carried out by 30 financial and credit institutions, including five state, six private, seven banks with foreign capital participation, and 12 joint stock and commercial banks. At the same time, 13 banks, including five state-owned ones, have a state share.

In their structure there are 855 branches, more than one thousand mini-banks, almost two thousand operating cash desks located outside the banks, as well as 939 currency exchange offices, 1,133 international money transfer offices, and 2,125 mobile cash desks.

Earlier, Standard and Poors’ (S&P) Global Ratings changed the rating of Hamkorbank from Positive to Stable (from B+/Positive/B to B+/Stable/B) and Orient Finance from Positive to Stable (from B/Positive/B to B/Stable/B).
