BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 31. The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 58.6 million cards as of May 1, 2022, in Kazakhstan, which is 11.5 percent more than as of May 1, 2021 (52.5 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 45.7 million cards were debit cards, 11.08 million cards were credit cards, and 1.8 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 29.7 million were used as of May 1, 2022, compared to 26.07 million cards last year, which indicates a 14.09 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (15.1 million cards). Almaty city is followed by Nur-Sultan city (3.7 million cards) and Shymkent city (2.6 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (4.9 million cards), which is followed by Shymkent (857,000 cards) and Nur-Sultan city (791,000 cards).

To dated, 19 financial institutions issue plastic cards in Kazakhstan, running on VISA International, MasterCard Worldwide, UnionPay International, American Express International payment systems.
