BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 6. bp will decarbonize infrastructure across projects in Azerbaijan and has already begun the process of decarbonizing the Sangachal oil and gas terminal and Shah Deniz gas condensate field platforms, bp's Vice President finance for the AGT region Colin Allan said at the 29th Baku Energy Forum in Azerbaijan on June 5, Trend reports.
According to him, if Azerbaijan wants to advance in the process of decarbonization, it must cover hydrocarbon production processes (Upstream), which produce large emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
A source in bp Azerbaijan explained that certain work has already begun regarding the decarbonization of operations on the Shah Deniz platforms.
"The energy supply for the Shah Deniz Alpha and Bravo production platforms is currently provided by generators that partially run on gas and partially on diesel fuel. However, we are working towards having the Alpha platform eventually receive electricity from the Bravo platform (they will be connected by a cable).
This will allow us to reduce or completely eliminate the use of gas for powering the Alpha platform, which is important in the process of decarbonizing production platforms," bp pointed out.
The second stage of the decarbonization process of the Shah Deniz platforms will tackle the issue of supplying Bravo platform with clean energy.
"Green energy from the Sangachal terminal is likely to be supplied to the Bravo platform. Thus, through these planned actions, bp will be able to decarbonize its operations in Azerbaijan over the next decade," the source added.
To note, over 600 delegates are participating in the forum, which began on June 5, representing a diverse range of countries including Australia, Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Georgia, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, UAE, Qatar, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, the UK, the US, and Uzbekistan. This year's forum boasts a record number of speakers, totaling 81.
The Forum's agenda will address energy issues of significance for Azerbaijan and the broader Caspian region, focusing primarily on considerations and financing related to energy security, energy transition, and green energy projects.
