BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 28. Azerbaijan is providing state support for intensive agricultural development, including various privileges and subsidies to encourage the use of modern irrigation systems, Deputy Agriculture Minister Ilhama Gadimova said at the “Role of Water Management Systems in Climate-Resilient Agriculture” COP29 round table, Trend reports.

She added that over the past five years, 93.3 million manats in subsidies have been allocated for constructing irrigation systems across 38,200 hectares.

The deputy minister emphasized that close cooperation with farmers and assisting them in adopting climate-resilient practices can speed up this process.

“The efficient use of water resources by farmers and their ability to adapt to climate change are crucial for the sector's sustainable development. These activities are central to the Harmony Initiative, which will be introduced at COP29 on November 19 during Food, Agriculture, and Water Day. This initiative aims to support agricultural communities and farmers in implementing modern water management systems and climate-resilient approaches,” Gadimova said.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70-80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP - the Conference of the Parties - is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
