BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11. A panel discussion on the topic “Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice” has been held within COP29, Trend reports.
Speaking at the event, IBON International's Climate Justice Policy Officer Jax Bongon said that COP29 must be a conference focused on addressing financing issues that respond to the urgent needs of Global South countries, at a panel discussion on the "Global Campaign to Demand Climate Justice".
“COP29 must be a conference focused on financing, one that answers the urgent needs of Global South countries. In these regions, people are fighting for their lives in the face of rising sea levels, flooding, super-typhoons, heatwaves, and droughts,” Bongon also said.
UK activist, Director of the War on Want organization Asad Rehman said that COP29 stands as a summit of hope.
According to him, respect for human rights and justice is the foundation for the development of a society based on respect and equality.
"We are gathered here, united by hope and the pursuit of justice, and we want these words to resonate across the world. We see that contemporary challenges, such as the pursuit of justice, the protection of human rights, and the rule of law, remain essential foundations for all peoples, despite the difficulties and obstacles.
International law, as recognized by the United Nations and international courts, calls us to responsibility, action, and the maintenance of peace and human rights worldwide. These principles are universal values that unite us and set the direction for a better future," he also said.
"We support efforts to ensure peace and cooperation. The achievements of the global civil society and the contributions of various nations to the protection of human rights demonstrate the progress that is possible when we unite with a common goal. We know that international institutions, such as the UN, were created to protect these principles, and we are determined to support them.
This COP summit is a summit of hope. It provides an opportunity for countries and peoples to unite and strengthen efforts toward achieving climate justice and peace. It symbolizes the importance of solidarity and cooperation in overcoming global challenges," added Rehman.
The opening ceremony of the much-anticipated COP29 conference has kicked off today at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
Representatives, leaders, and climate experts from around the globe gathered to mark the beginning of what is set to be one of the largest climate events of the year.
The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 of last year.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed in June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. A total of 198 countries participate in the convention. Unless otherwise agreed, COP is held annually. The first COP took place in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
