( dpa ) - A painting by Swedish writer and playwright August Strindberg has been recovered two years after it was stolen in a daylight raid in central Stockholm, police said Friday.

Three accomplices were believed to have taken part in the noontime raid at the Strindberg Museum in February 2006, two distracted a museum employee while a third ripped the painting, Night of Jealousy, from the wall.

The trio then raced into the street and disappeared in the throng.

The painting, valued at 10 million kronor (1.6 million dollars) was discovered Thursday evening during a police drugs raid at a house in a Stockholm suburb.

Police arrested two men on suspicion of handling stolen goods, and art experts were to study the painting for possible damage. Initial inspections suggested the 1893 painting was not damaged.

Strindberg (1849-1912) is regarded as one of Sweden's most influential authors.
