Being held in Baku, the first meeting of Ministers of Communications of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) member countries is a new impulse to the development of relations and implementation of new regional projects, the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies of Azerbaijan Ali Abbasov said at the meeting.

"This meeting can be evaluated as important, because this is the first meeting held at the level of the BSEC, and the last under Azerbaijan's chairmanship to the organization," said Abbasov.

According to the minister, in recent years, cooperation of the BSEC countries is actively developing, especially in the field of information technologies. It is encouraging that there is a project at the regional level (project information superhighway "East-West"), Abbasov said.

On Nov. 4, in Baku, the Ministers of BSEC member countries held a meeting within Azerbaijan International Exhibition BakuTel-2009. During the meeting, the heads of administrations of communication discuss the issues of regional development, development of information technologies in their countries, as well as the ways and prospects of cooperation of the BSEC countries.

The Azerbaijani side holds the presentation of the information superhighway "East-West", which is designed to connect a total of 20 countries and play the role of locomotive for the development of the region. The project will eliminate the "gap" between countries within the Western European and Pacific basins.

As a result of the meeting of Ministers of the BSEC countries, a declaration and action plan of BSEC ICT group until May 2010 will be accepted.

From May to October, Azerbaijan was the chairman of the BSEC. Within the meeting of foreign ministers which took place on Oct. 22 in Baku the chairmanship was transferred to Bulgaria.
