Kazakhstan must convert the Defense Ministry's RF to introduce 4G communications, Agency for Informatization and Communications (AIC) Chairman Kuanyshbek Yessekeyev said today.

"Following the introduction of third-generation mobile communications 3G [from Jan.1, 2010], the next step will be to apply 4G. However, this requires converting the ministry's radio frequency spectrum," he added.

According to Yessekeyev, the country's frequency band distribution is five percent in the civil band and 95 percent in the defense band.

"This division is the legacy of the Soviet past. For example, Israel's frequency band distribution is 60 percent in the civilian band and 40 percent in the defense band," he said.

Three operators use GSM mobile communications standard - GSM Kazakhstan, Kar-Tel and Mobile Telecom Service. GSM Kazakhstan and Kar-Tel have voiced an interest in applying 3G.
