Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan.11 / Trend , H.Veliyev /

The Institute of Geology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan has completed practical operations on research of the geodynamic state of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, the Institute said.

Operations conducted under a contract with BP, envisaged monitoring the Azerbaijani section of the pipeline for presence of deformation. Global positioning system (GPS) was involved in the project, leveling was held and radiometric and gravimetric metering method was used. Geophysical model of the structure of the earth cover depth was introduced basically for the Sangachal-Ganja-Tbilisi profile based on the received data.

In general, as a result of 2009, six research projects of the Institute of Geology were awarded to grants. These projects are "Development of biotechnological methods for improving production level from the developed pools in the Absheron Peninsula", "Integrated stratigraphy of the Oligocene Pliocene stage of the Caspian Sea and improvement of the climate", "Creation of Azerbaijan and Slovenia's radon cadastre, the reduction of radon risk and diagnostic using the Swiss method and experience", "Tectonics of the Caucasus", "Ecological assessment and restoration of water supply systems", "GIS analysis of environmental state of the Caspian Sea and the use of remotely sensed data and sea researches".

BТС's total length is 1.768 kilometers including a 443-kilometer section running via Azerbaijan, a 249-kilometer section passing via Georgia and a 1,076-kilometer section traversing Turkey. Construction of the pipeline began in April 2003. The pipeline launched May 18, 2005.

A total of $4 billion was spent on. These costs include construction, filling the pipeline. Financial expenses and payment of bank interest rates are not included. The credit allocated for the project totaled $2.6 billion.

Oil from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli block and Kazakh oil from the Tengiz oil field is transpoted via this pipeline to the Mediterranean Sea. At present, the amount of the daily pumping is about 900 000 barrels per day. Maximum capacity of the pipeline is 1.2 million barrels of oil per day.

BTC transports mainly oil produced small volumes of Kazakh oil from the Tengiz field. In January-November BTC transported 1.8 million tons of oil from Tengiz. The index was 188,700 tons of oil in November.

BTC shareholders include BP (30.1 percent); AzBTC (25 percent); Chevron (8.90 percent); Statoil Hydro (8.71 percent); ТРАО (6.53 percent); Eni (5 percent); Total (5 percent); Itochu (3.40 percent); Inpex (2.50 percent); ConocoPhillips (2.50 percent) and Amerada Hess (2.36 percent).
