Azercell Telecom is sponsoring a cycle marathon this week to draw the attention of the public to the need to protect the environment. The marathon began in Baku today as a core event of the Year of Ecology in Azerbaijan.

The marathon aims to demonstrate the importance of environmental safety, a healthy lifestyle, and environmental education.

The "Bicycle Week" campaign involved 32 participants from 14 countries. The marathon started in Baku and will pass through the regions of Gobustan, Shamakhi, Ismayilli, Gabala, Goychay, and Mingechevir before finishing in Ganja on Sept. 6.

Participants will enjoy the nature in these regions and participate in discussions on ecology as part of the event.

The campaign is mediated by several government agencies, including the foreign, youth and sport, and ecology and natural resources ministries, as well as the NATO European Economic Chamber of Commerce.

Azercell is the sponsor of the event. The company had repeatedly supported athletic events and tournaments in the country to promote the development of sports among the country's youths.

Azercell also supported the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Cup in 2005, as well as a recent football tournament organized by the Turkey-Azerbaijan Entrepreneurs Society and a volleyball club organized at the Communications and IT Ministry. Azercell was also a sponsor at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore this year. The company has repeatedly stated its intention to remain at the forefront of athletic development in Azerbaijan.
