ICT income amounts to 31.3 percent in Azerbaijan

The income of the ICT sector and postal services in Azerbaijan amounted to 1.158.9 million manat in 2010 growing by 31.3 percent compared to 2009, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry reported.

The income of the ICT sector and postal services in Azerbaijan amounted to 1.158.9 million manat in 2010 growing by 31.3 percent compared to 2009, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry reported.

In 2010, the ministry implemented a number of projects, which include increasing the capacity of a telecommunications network, providing financial services through post offices,  signing of contracts on the launch of the first Azerbaijani telecommunications satellite Azerspace, expanding AzDATACOM segment, reducing Internet tariffs, development infrastructure of the digital television, creation of centers of the issuance of digital signature among others.

The construction of fiber-optic cable line in the direction of Siyazan-Shabran-Guba-Samur was also completed to ensure sustainability of the international system of communication and increase the capacity of optical networks.

The ministry had completed work on 100 percent electronization of the regional telecommunications nodes. The country has also achieved 100 percent mobile penetration, while digital television services reached to about 50 percent of the population.

According to preliminary estimates, 14 personal computers and 45 Internet users account are being used by every 100 persons presently. The penetration rate of broadband Internet was 12 percent during last year.
