Google unveiled new music and movie services Tuesday and said that its upcoming version of its Android mobile operating system would be optimized for both smartphones and tablet computers, dpa reported.
The internet software giant also revealed plans to extend the reach of Android to power a whole range of connected household devices from televisions to exercise bikes and fridges.
In the keynote address at the start of the company's developer conference Tuesday, Google said that over 100 million Android devices have so far been activated, with more than 400,000 new activations taking place every single day. Over 4.5 billion Android apps have been installed with the Android Market now offering over 200,000 separate apps.
"The Android ecosystem has been moving really fast over the last two and a half years and rapid iteration on new and highly-requested features has been a driving force behind Android's success," Android product management director Hugh Barra said.
Music Beta by Google will allow users - in the US initially - to copy their digital music collections to the cloud and access them from myriad devices. But the launch took place without the support of major record labels, who fear that the service will quickly become a piracy tool that will cannibalise music sales.
Google executive Jamie Rosenberg said the company was close to agreement with two of the four major labels.
