By Huseyn Veliyev – Trend:

The state communication operator of Azerbaijan Aztelekom LLC company has purchased 7,000 units of Set-Top Box equipment to expand the number of connections to the IP-TV service, the company told Trend.

A foreign company (the title of which is not disclosed) was chosen as a supplier of the equipment, the company said, without revealing the name.

"Currently, the IP-TV service is offered to a limited number of subscribers. To expand the number of connections to this service, it is necessary to purchase additional equipment. The IP-TV service will be offered by the operator exclusively in the regions of the country," the company stated.

As previously reported, the provision of IP-TV services has been licensed from January 2016. This rule equates the activities of operators providing IP-TV services to the activities of cable TV operators. Therefore, the illegal provision of this service is prevented in accordance with the current legislation. At the level of law enforcement agencies and tax inspectorate, the measures are taken against companies that illegally provide this type of service. As a result of these measures, the Internet TV market in Azerbaijan has become fully legalized, which in turn has allowed for establishing a healthy competitive environment.

The licensing of Internet TV services is regulated by the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council of Azerbaijan. The validity period of the license for the provision of IP-TV services is six years.
