Azerfon to upgrade mobile service on board of aircraft (UPDATE)

The mobile operator of Azerbaijan, Azerfon LLC (Nar trademark), is preparing to offer its subscribers an upgraded mobile communication service on board of aircraft of Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL).

The mobile operator of Azerbaijan, Azerfon LLC (Nar trademark), is preparing to offer its subscribers an upgraded mobile communication service on board of aircraft of Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL), the Chief Executive Officer of Azerfon LLC Gunnar Pahnke told reporters Sept. 28.

Pahnke noted that the negotiations on this issue with the airline company are already underway.

"All the details of the project will be made public next month," Pahnke said.

The mobile communication services of Azerfon company were deployed for the first time in Airbus airliners of AZAL company (Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC) in 2013.

In addition to using voice services and SMS and MMS services, the passengers could also view news, check emails, log on to social networks and so on.

The "Nar Air" tariff plan was made available for subscribers of Nar network. The cost of a minute of incoming and outgoing calls on board of the airliners amounted to two manats. Some 0.50 manat were charged for the sending of SMS (incoming SMS messages were received free of charge). The cost of sending MMS was 2.6 manats, and nine manats were charged for one megabyte of GPRS.

The mobile communication on aircraft is controlled by means of the ground station of the OnAir company in Amsterdam.
