Baku, Azerbaijan, October 4

By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

The State Customs Committee of Azerbaijan has strengthened checks on mobile phones imported into the country, a source in the country's mobile phone market told Trend.

The source said all measures taken by the committee are based on the current legal regulation.

"The invoices for mobile phones submitted to customs stations are carefully checked for compliance with the purchase price, as many cases have been detected when the importers deliberately lowered the purchase price of devices in documents in order to pay less customs duties when importing the devices into the country. All these attempts have been clamped down, which leads to recovery of the market", the source said.

The differentiated method of registration was introduced in the country in the second half of August, which involves the classification of duties on mobile phones of high, medium and low price segments. This allows to define a fixed duty on mobile phones, depending on their cost and model.

For example, registration of mobile devices with a market value of up to $100, which do not have access to the internet, photo and video functions, costs 20 manats.

For other mobile devices, the cost of registration will be 30 manats (at a market price of mobile device up to $100), 50 manats (from $101 to $200), 60 manats (from $201 to $400), 70 manats (from $401 to $700), 100 manats (from $701 to $1,000), 150 manats (from $1,001 and above).

As previously reported, thanks to the measures taken, the share of the "gray" market has decreased from 80 to 40 percent.

Officially, the customs clearance of a device of the high price segment, plus payment of VAT costs the official channels about 30 percent of the cost of a smartphone.

The official exchange rate for October 4 is 1.7 AZN / USD.
