Within the framework of the Azerbaijan Digital Hub program implemented by Azerbaijan’s AzerTelecom LLC telecommunication operator, projects are underway to turn the country into a regional digital center, a source in the AzerTelecom told Trend.

The source in the company noted that in general, this program consists of the following three stages: the creation of a sustainable trunk infrastructure, both within the country and abroad; the transformation of the Baku city into an internet exchange center and the further maintaining of the content of large providers (Google, Facebook, Netflix, Apple, Alibaba, Amazon, Tencent); the formation of a digital ecosystem in the country.

The company’s representative stated that within the framework of the first phase of the program, projects are underway to lay the main fiber-optic cable lines both within the country and abroad.

Jointly with Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, we implement a project to lay fiber-optic cable lines along the protective strip of railways across the country, said the source.

"Laying of trunk fiber-optic cable lines along the railways will help strengthen the country's digital infrastructure, create a new sustainable infrastructure throughout the country and contribute to the creation of sustainable broadband fiber-optic cable connections with neighboring states - Russia, Georgia, Turkey and Iran, as well as the development of telecommunication sectors in the country. It will also make the digital services provided to the population better and more sustainable. Comprehensive work is ongoing to implement this project,” added the representative.

According to the source, within the first stage, a project is also being implemented to lay trunk fiber-optic cable lines along the bottom of the Caspian Sea between Azerbaijan and the countries of Central Asia, which is called Trans-Caspian Fiber Optic (TCFO) cable line.

The aim of the project is the formation of a Digital Silk Way between Europe and Asia through Azerbaijan, by laying trunk cable lines that allow passing large volumes of information. The Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable line project consists of two routes: Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan. Currently, activities of the working groups in both areas continues, the source conluded.
