BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 5

By Nargiz Ismayilova - Trend:

Azerbaijan’s AzerTelecom backbone internet provider, which connects the country with the internet, is implementing various local and international projects in the telecommunications sector, a source in the company told Trend.

"AzerTelecom has a stable and extensive domestic and international network,” the source added. “Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) stable and advanced technology network, which is a technology that allows to simultaneously transmit several information channels through one optical fiber at different carrier frequencies, used by the company covers all districts and cities of Azerbaijan, including Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.”

“Presently, the company is working to expand the network in districts. The new fiber optic cable lines are being laid,” the source said.

“In connection with the use of Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAM), I would like to stress that this does not apply to the services which are rendered by AzerTelecom,” the source said. “This technology is used by subscribers in villages and settlements via a fixed telephone network, in which it is generally impossible to lay fiber-optic cable lines by internet service providers," the source said while answering a question about the plans of using DSLAM technology.

“The projects are being implemented to expand the network bandwidth, maintain the throughput of transit traffic in terabits per second,” the source added. “The projects are being implemented to cover all districts of the country in the existing Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), which is a routing technique in telecommunications networks that directs data from one node to the next based on short path labels rather than long network addresses.”

“At the same time, these projects are designed to increase the sustainability of the existing network, as well as to ensure and protect high-performance services in all directions,” the source said.

"Presently, the projects are being implemented to turn the country into a regional digital hub within the Azerbaijan Digital Hub program being implemented by AzerTelecom,” the source said. “In general, this program consists of three stages. They include the creation of a sustainable trunk infrastructure, both within the country and abroad; the transformation of Baku city into an internet exchange center and the further keeping of the content of big providers (Google, Facebook, Netflix, Apple, Alibaba, Amazon, Tencent); and the formation of a digital ecosystem in the country.”

“Currently, the projects are being implemented to lay the backbone fiber-optic cable lines both domestically and abroad as part of the first phase of the program,” the source said.

“Together with Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, a project is being implemented to lay fiber-optic cable lines along the rail protection strip in the country to enhance the country's digital infrastructure, create a new sustainable infrastructure throughout the country and contribute to the creation of a stable broadband fiber-optic cable connection with neighboring countries, namely, Russia, Georgia, Turkey and Iran, as well as the development of telecommunication sector in the country,” the source added.

“This will also make the digital services rendered to the population better and more sustainable," the source said, stressing that comprehensive work on the implementation of this project is underway.

“A project is also being implemented to lay the backbone fiber-optic cable lines along the bottom of the Caspian Sea between Azerbaijan and the Central Asian countries within the first stage of the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable line project,” the source said.

"The aim of the project is the formation of the Digital Silk Way between Europe and Asia through Azerbaijan by laying the backbone cable lines that allow big volumes of information to pass through,” the source said. “The Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable line project consists of two routes, namely, Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan."

He added that presently, the project working groups' activities continue.

AzerTelecom is a telecommunication operator in Azerbaijan, a subsidiary of Bakcell, the first mobile communication operator and provider of the fastest mobile internet in Azerbaijan.

Through an extensive network, the company connects Azerbaijan with the internet. The company also offers a wide range of innovative services for local and foreign telecommunications companies.
