Break of fiber-optic communication cable in Germany brought to temporary malfunction of Internet in Azerbaijan

ICT Materials 31 January 2006 17:27 (UTC +04:00)

At the result of the damage of the fiber-optic communication cable, laid in the direction of Russia and farther to Europe, through which the basic informational traffic from Azerbaijan runs, the countrys most providers failed to render Internet services to their customers on 31 January during several hours.

The rupture occurred in Germany, deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technologies Iltimaz Mammadov told Trend. The problems with Internet have been settled about two hours later.

The main informational traffic is currently running through the fiber-optic communication cable through Russia (earlier the satellite canal was used for transmission of information). It is not the first time that the cable breaks, at the result of which Azerbaijan remains practically without Internet. About 90% of the countrys providers use exactly this traffic. Only AzEvroTel company possesses its own satellite terminal via which it puts its traffic through.
