Communications Ministry to Present Proposals for AzerSat Project

Аzerbaijan, Baku /corr. Trend S. Babayeva/ The Azerbaijani Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies will prepare and present proposals to the Government with regards to the launch of Azerbaijan's national satellite AzerSat.

The Ministry states that presently the interested companies and this process will completed by the end of July. The proposals are from six companies. Most of the available proposals will be submitted to the Government.

The Ministry does not exclude that two companies may be selected, one for preparation and one for launch of the satellite.

The coverage zone of the satellite includes Europe and part of Asia - Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. Presently a special work group on the AzerSat project is functioning at the Ministry with the participation of international organizations. The financial sources of the project amounting to $80-100mln have not yet been defined. In 2008, Azerbaijan intends to acquire a place in orbit for its satellite and launching it may take place after 2010.

Azerbaijan is not a very large country and will not require all the satellite's resources, only 20-25% of its capacity. Therefore, the excess is to be sold to other countries under its coverage.
