Cargo transportation via TRACECA through Azerbaijan mainly falls on road transport

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 18

The volume of freight traffic through the Azerbaijani section of the Transport Corridor Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) stood at 12.5 million tons, while the cargo turnover reached 2.6 billion ton-kilometersin the first quarter of 2020, Trend reports on May 18 referring to the country’s State Statistical Committee (SCC).

The volume of freight traffic slid by 1 percent compared to the same period of last year, according to the committee.

Road transport accounted for the major part of the freight traffic with over 8.9 million tons, which made up 64.3 percent of the total volume. The freight traffic via road transport grew by 9.3 percent.

Rail transport with 3.2 million tons accounted for 25.7 percent of all traffic, reducing by 18.1 percent, compared to the period from January through March 2029.

Meanwhile, maritime transport accounted for 10 percent of the total cargo transportation with 1.2 million tons, down by almost 3.1 percent.

About 17.6 percent (2.2 million tons) of goods were transited through TRACECA.

The Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) TRACECA is open for all the initiatives promoting the development of regional transport dialogue and ensuring the efficient and reliable Euro-Asian transport links, promoting the regional economy on the whole.

TRACECA corridor is involved in gradually developing trends of trade and economic development. Major traffic flows passing through a corridor formed on the one hand, in Western and Central Europe, and on the other - in Central and South-East Asia.
